Introduction: The use of pigments has accompanied humankind for thousands of years, being a major influencing factor and used as a form of communication, social marking, cultural expression, funerary rites, mimicry, and religiosity, with red ochre (hematite) being the most common pigment found. Analyzing the past and comparing it with the present allows us a broader view of human development throughout this time, our perspectives, growth, and how its use is much more representative than is generally known. Objectives: To research the use of pigments and their origins in cosmetics, studying the minerals used and observing those still used. Materials and methods: Books, research, and articles published in scientific journals, government, and academic websites were used for the development of this study. Results: The use of pigments is a form of non-verbal communication used by various cultures throughout history. Analyzing how some pigments used to this day have such ancient origins with similar purposes brings us a satisfactory conclusion. Final considerations: The use of pigments in the human body has been present since our origins, being a crucial factor in development.
