Abstract

Com o avanço do século XXI, chega cada vez mais ao centro do debate a influência na política da internet e, particularmente, de uma incomum e despretenciosa linguagem virtual: os memes. Populares em diversos setores da sociedade, essas mídias cômicas estão cada vez mais presentes na vida das pessoas, mas será que eles não representam uma ameaça ao fazer democrático? Memes são famosos por serem divertidos, mas também por fazer simplificações, propagar fake news e reforçar preconceitos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo averiguar como os memes são vistos pela sociedade e sondar se há realmente um grande poder de influência nos mesmos.

As the 21st century progresses, the influence of the internet, and particularly of an unusual and unpretentious form of virtual language: memes, is increasingly at the center of political debate. Popular across various sectors of society, these humorous media are becoming more and more present in people’s lives. But could they represent a threat to democratic practice? Memes are known for being entertaining, but also for making oversimplifications, spreading fake news, and reinforcing prejudices. This article aims to investigate how memes are perceived by society and to explore whether they truly possess significant power of influence.
