The present study investigates the dimensional stability of textile substrates composed of cotton fibers, with an analytical focus on the 3x1 twill weave, regarding the physicochemical demands inherent to the exhaustion dyeing process. The central problem of this research lies in understanding how the variation in bath temperature acts as the primary vector of shrinkage, a phenomenon that directly impacts the quality, patterning, and commercial yield of textile articles. The primary objective consisted of quantifying and interpreting the influence of different thermal gradients — specifically at levels of 40 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C — on fiber contraction in the warp and weft directions. To achieve these goals, the methodology was based on a quantitative experimental approach, using fabrics previously prepared for dyeing (PFD), which were subjected to exhaustion processes with reactive dyes. Data collection and analysis were based on the rigorous technical measurement of sample dimensions in pre- and post-chemical finishing stages. The results evidenced that shrinkage is a markedly asymmetrical and predominantly longitudinal phenomenon, presenting warp contraction rates that ranged between -3.75% and -5.0%, while the weft direction showed a trend toward full dimensional stability. It was verified that the increase in thermal energy in the system is directly proportional to the magnitude of contraction, reaching its maximum saturation point in the test conducted at 80 °C. These findings ratify the premise that the heated aqueous medium functions as a plasticizing agent and catalyst, promoting the relaxation of severe mechanical stresses accumulated during the sizing and weaving stages. It is concluded that the dimensional stability of the twill fabric is intrinsically conditioned by the mechanical memory of the manufacturing process, evidencing that dyeing not only alters chromatic aesthetics but also reconfigures the physical structure of the material. The study highlights the strategic importance of technical shrinkage prediction for the optimization of industrial yield and for ensuring the technical compliance required by the global apparel market.
