O espartilho em ajuste

Abstract

De símbolo do patriarcado à independência feminina, de romântico à anarquista e irreverente. Presente em diferentes épocas da história da humanidade de diferentes formas e significados, o Espartilho é um dos artigos de vestuário mais controversos e icônicos da história da indumentária, com registros do séc. XVI, durante o período elisabetano até a metade do séc. XX, nos anos dourados. Cercado de escândalos e polêmicas sobre o seu uso e inúmeras histórias à respeito de costelas arrancadas, órgãos esmagados, donzelas imóveis e enfermas ao banimento do seu uso por grandes estúdios cinematográficos. Mas como poderia um artigo de vestuário tão desconfortável, limitador e mortal quanto o espartilho, persistir na história da indumentária por tanto tempo? A proposta do seguinte trabalho é pesquisar e analisar o uso e desempenho do espartilho através de fontes primárias e secundária devidamente embasadas, ou seja, a partir da narrativas de pessoas que realmente usavam essas peças em seu cotidiano: suas motivações, efeitos, limites e vantagens a fim de instigar reflexão sobre a legitimidade dos conhecimentos à respeito do nosso passado como sociedade. Se algo tão “perverso” como um artigo de roupa pôde ser tão distorcido ao longo do tempo, o que mais da história foi encoberto? Palavras-chaves: Espartilho; História; Indumentária.

From a symbol of patriarchy to female independence, from romantic to anarchist and irreverent. Present in different eras of human history in different forms and meanings, the corset is one of the most controversial and iconic articles of clothing in the history of garments, with records dating from the 16th century, during the Elizabethan period, to the mid-20th century, in the golden years. Surrounded by scandals and controversies about its use and countless stories about ribs being torn off, organs crushed, maidens immobile and ill, and its banning by major cinematic studios. But how could an article of clothing uncomfortable, restrictive, and deadly as the corset, persist in the history of clothing for so long? The goal of this work is to research and analyze the use and performance of the corset through properly primary and secondary sources, that is, from the narratives of people who actually used these garments in their daily lives: their motivations, effects, limitations, and advantages, in order to provoke reflection on the legitimacy of knowledge about our past as a society. If something as "wicked" as an article of clothing could be so distorted over time, what else of history has been covered up? Keywords: Corset; History; Clothing
