| Abstract: | Polyurethane is among the most important plastics for being a modern product and a
versatile material that can be used in several segments. The flexible foams of
polyurethane are present in our daily lives as in mattresses, couch, upholstery and
acoustic panels. The usability of foams is great and with time are discarded on the
streets, vacant lots or sent to landfills. In this study it was selected flexible foams,
transformed into flakes and mixed with a new mixture of polyol and isocyanate. This
procedure allowed to obtain a new foam ready to be used in applications where it is
usually found. The objective is to study a flexible foam recycling process of PU,
seeking an answer for this question: Does the flexible foam discarded after use have
any chance of reuse? The hypothesis is that it is possible to recycle since it is
compatible and ideal to the material. The flakes mixture with a new system polyol +
isocyanate allowed the achievement which, although it expanded less than the pure
system polyol + isocyanate, remained the compatibility and flexibility. The study
proved to be a viable alternative to the destination of flexible foams of PU, which are
normally discarded harmfully through the environment. The result of the recycled
foam was positive for producing a new foam composed of flakes dispersed in the
new polyol and isocyanate.
