Green roofs are presented as a management technology and a sustainable solution to address the adverse effects of urbanization; however, there are still gaps in knowledge to be filled to make their application viable. This study aimed to conduct a survey of articles developed on green roofs, seeking to highlight the main benefits and limitations of applying green roofs as a sustainable technology. The methodology used was a systematic review, in which national publications were evaluated and collected to support the research. In the systematic review carried out in this work, the articles published in Brazil stood out in qualitative terms. Regarding the plant species used, the most commonly used were included in the study; however a need for further in-depth research on the physiology of the plants used in the research was observed. From the point of view of environmental benefit, the green roof system has the capacity to reduce energy needs for interior climate control, and can also promote the reduction of air pollution, although this is a less applied area of study than the aforementioned one, and contribute to urban drainage. The performance of the technology is influenced by the type of climate, vegetation used, and type of substrate. Thus, technology becomes more viable when it meets local needs, so that the costs of implementation and maintenance are outweighed by its benefits. Otherwise, its application becomes limited, especially in countries that do not have public policies to support sustainable projects.
