This paper presents the analysis of an improvement applied to an industrial autogenous plasma welding process used for the longitudinal joining of oval tubes manufactured from 0.8 mm thick stainless steel sheet. The study addresses the implementation of a different welding system for the analyzed oval product, based on an operating concept distinct from the original tunnel-type process. In the initial condition, the workpiece moved during welding, and joint closing strongly depended on the geometry obtained during the roll forming process, favoring misalignment, edge overlap, and excessive fusion, with an approximate rejection rate of 95%. The improvement focused on the mechanical control of positioning, alignment, and clamping of the workpiece through the use of a support cradle, lateral jaws, an alignment blade, clamping pads, and an internally cooled mandrel, allowing welding to occur with the workpiece stabilized and with the torch moving along the joint. The welding parameters of 110 A, 17 V, 1000 mm/min travel speed, and 15 L/min gas flow rate were analyzed through arc energy and heat input calculations. After implementation, the rejection rate was reduced to approximately 4% to 5%, demonstrating that the main contribution of the improvement is associated with the geometric stability of the joint before arc application.pt_BR
